Long Bio

K. Dzr is a designer, author and artist from Detroit, MI. She is a long-time fan of sci-fi, fantasy and superheroes and began collecting comics and reading Terry Brooks novels at a young age. She spent most of her childhood drawing, writing and dreaming of fantastical places and characters, a hobby she continues to this day. Despite positive feedback on early written works, she had little desire to pursue a writing career and instead focused her creative energy into drawing. It wasn't until college, and after a lot of persuasion from her mother during a conversation about an idea for a comic book that she began writing her first novel, Legends Born. A few years later she fulfilled her childhood dream of creating a comic book with the release of REBOOT #01.

K. Dzr prefers to write science fiction, fantasy and adventure stories highlighting people and places often ignored by Hollywood. Her stories typically feature characters from under-represented cultures, people with disabilities, mental illness and senior citizens having big adventures. Friendship, working hard to achieve goals and respecting and preserving the environment, wildlife and different cultures are common themes in her work. She truly believes that art doesn't just imitate life, but influences it as well, and that a pen-stroke can indeed change the world. So she tries to make each one count.

K. Dzr lives in Detroit with her Grandmother and her dog, Eerie. She enjoys traveling, fighting zombies, learning languages, developing apps, tying knots, parkour, soccer and finding adventures in everyday life. She works as a Graphic/Web Designer and part-time ESL instructor and is currently studying Software Engineering with an emphasis in Mobile Applications and User Experience.

Facts About K. Dzr

  1. K. Dzr loves foreign languages, cultures, people and places. K. dzr has travelled to or through most of the continental United States throughout her life, with several trips to Canada and Europe. As a stereotypical American, her native language is English, but K. Dzr has studied both Italian and Spanish to varying degrees of fluency and dabbles with languages like Navajo, Russian, Arabic and German, with hopes of one day becoming a polyglot. While she believes all cultures have their charm and beauty, K. Dzr fell in love with Italy in 2011, has had a long-time love affair with México and is absolutely fascinated by Iceland. She has a lengthy list of places to visit before the alien invasion or zombie apocalypse happens.
  2. Sense may be common in some, not so much for K. Dzr. Before doing something that some people would consider idiotic, K. Dzr only asks two questions: 1. Is this a good idea? 2. Will it at least make for a good story? If the answer to either one of these is 'yes,' well...let's just say she has a lot of good stories.
  3. K. Dzr travelled through the UK alone with $700, her laptop, camera and the clothes she was wearing. And $700 didn't equal nearly as many pounds as she thought it would. But, she watched druids dance around Stonehenge, searched for the Loch Ness Monster and lost like 10 pounds because food in the UK is...you know. Horrible.
  4. K. Dzr thinks it's weird to refer to herself in third person. At least, at first she did. But now it's starting to grow on her and she's considering doing it all the time.
  5. K. Dzr does not approve of the oxford comma.
  6. K. Dzr does not think of herself as an artist, nor does she like to be referred to as one. Even though she writes, plays more than one musical instrument and works as a graphic/web designer, she just doesn't think she fits the profile of an artist and doesn't consider her work to be art. She doesn't create art as an outlet, or to express emotion. She draws to convey an idea, or to develop a product or website. She writes to tell a story, usually with religious, social or political undertones; but it just doesn't go any deeper than that.
  7. K. Dzr rarely reads for pleasure. She reads for educational purposes, she reads while walking on a treadmill, she'll read in foreign languages as a way to study, but rarely picks up a novel and reads it for 'fun'.
  8. K. Dzr cares a lot more than she says she does. K. Dzr regularly gives to charities, assists in fund raising for various organizations, raises awareness for social injustices through social media and interacting with people, is a volunteer tutor at a local adult education program and engages the youth in her neighborhood. The issues she is most passionate about are human trafficking, adult illiteracy, racism and sexism in the media in particular, the difficulties facing the Native American community, conflict minerals and preventing gentrification in her city.
  9. K. Dzr did not complain once about the polar vortex. But as soon as the temperature rises above 72°F, she is ready to throw a fit.
  10. K. Dzr doesn't like professional sports. Unless they are professional skateboarders or snowboarders. That's pretty cool. She also likes the World Cup. It's only once every four years, and is one of the few times you can yell obscenities at another country without coming off as racist. It's kind of fun.
  11. K. Dzr believes that science and religion are not mutually exclusive. The Bible says that God created the Earth, the Sun and the Moon. Science says there was a Big Bang. Why does it have to be one or the other? God says "Let there be light." BANG! Problem solved, let's stop fighting about it.
  12. K. Dzr has always had a fondness for superheroes, mutants and things that transform. Naturally, she is a huge fan of Transformers (but not Go-Bots...ew), Ninja Turtles, He-Man, She-Ra, ThunderCats, Voltron, BraveStarr and comic books in general. Because X3 and Spider-Man 3 nearly caused her to lose all faith in the things she loved most, K. Dzr was extremely hesitant to watch the Avengers movies. But she did and liked them…kind of.
  13. K. Dzr was once asked in a job interview what she liked most about being a designer. After thinking it over a moment, she said with a straight face, "It's like being God." She got the job.
  14. K. Dzr cannot swim. But that didn't stop her from diving into the deep end of a pool on a dare. She figured her friends wouldn't actually let her drown. She was right.
  15. K. Dzr loves Mexican food. She could eat it every day. In fact, she often does. And when she's not eating Mexican, it's Italian. She regularly makes homemade pasta and pizza dough from scratch with homemade sauces as well as the ocassional limoncello, nocino and tiramisù. One of the many benefits of having so many great italian friends, is getting their recipes! She's been known to eat homemade calzones and pizzas for breakfast and tacos for...well any meal, really, and her quesadillas have become famous among friends.
  16. K. Dzr wants to be the change. She has dreams of one day building a family center in her neighborhood. The focus would be to help impoverished and high risk families get the help they need: counseling, education, job-training, financial advice, child care and so on. She is also developing a language learning website where the profits would go to increasing literacy and language learning in impoverished areas.
  17. K. Dzr is a hard-worker, diligent student, morally responsible, tax-paying, loyal friend who loves her family and wants to make a positive impact in the world. But she doesn't take herself too seriously. She strongly believes in having fun, making people laugh, and having adventures while getting a few bumps and bruises along the way.

Quotes from K. Dzr

K. Dzr has been known to say all of these things. Sometimes more than once.

“Realistically, I'm probably the funniest person you know. I'm certainly the funniest person I know.”

“I just don't feel alive unless I'm almost dying.”

“Everybody's a douche about what they do.”

“Well, I didn't hate it...so...”

“I don't really believe there's going to be a zombie apocolypse, but I want to be prepared just in case. You never know. Besides, the same preparations will probably work for an alien invasion anyway. So either way, I'm covered.”

“If you think about it, really think about it, all of our problems, failures, hardships and crimes can be boiled down to 4 things: Human beings are overall 1. Stupid 2. Lazy 3. Self-Centered 4. Scared. All of us. Some more of one than another, but generally we're not bad, we're not evil we're not out to get anyone, we just occasionally succumb the above weaknesses and hurt ourselves and each other. Truthfully, I think fear is the big one. Afraid you'll lose your job, your wife/husband will leave you, that you're a bad parent, that the kids won't think you're cool...millions of horrible choices made just because we're all running around scared. When you think of it that way, forgiveness and patience is a lot easier.”

“I hope I die flat broke because I spent every last dime doing something awesome.”
